MS patient with daughterIT WAS TIME FOR A CHANGE

"At some point I realized the path I was on was not the best for my type A personality, where I must be the captain of my own destiny. While my neurologist was smart and qualified, he was a generalist. He had some MS patients, but it was not the focus of his practice and ultimately he was not proactively addressing my condition. It was at that point that I sought a neurologist who was a specialist in MS and whose practice was specific to and focused on MS. I did my research, and found Dr. Sadiq. Dr. Sadiq was a game changer for me. Before seeing Dr. Sadiq, I wasn't necessarily convinced that even I had MS, after all I only had the one lesion. So technically I had 'singular' sclerosis. I was living in semi-denial. He explained that if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck! He said we can be proactive and treat me for MS or we can wait for another episode, one that could possibly leave me with some degree of disability. We chose the former. I went on treatment and have been disease activity free for 16 years. Dr. Sadiq's guidance and expertise allowed me to feel I was taking back control of my life, and with his support and friendship not to mention his wonderful team, I haven't looked back. My anxiety, panic and constant fear are long since gone, and I now live my life with the confidence and expectation of a healthy and full life. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Sadiq and the IMSMP." - Steve Young

MS patient with familyCOPING WITH A NEW MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS IS A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE

"However, it doesn't necessarily have to be a difficult one. In July of 2011, I was floored when first diagnosed with MS. However, in what should have been one of the most difficult times in my life, Dr. Stark and the IMSMP team found a way to make my diagnosis manageable. Fortunate enough to have found Dr. Stark just a few months after my diagnosis, he not only helped me manage my initial pain and vision issues, but was also able to comfort the concerns I had about my future as well. Having just founded my own social media agency, one which was rapidly growing, I had great concerns as to whether or not I could keep up and continue to be a part of and enjoy the business I had worked so hard to create and grow. Dr. Stark and his staff were able to reassure me that with proper treatment and care from IMSMP, I would be able live my life no differently than before I was diagnosed. It's now been three years since my diagnosis and my business is thriving. More importantly, so am I! Needless to say, I am beyond appreciative of the care, concern and expertise demonstrated by Dr. Stark." - Stephanie Abrams Cartin

Attending NeurologistDR. ARMISTEAD WILLIAMS HAS GIVEN ME MY LIFE BACK

"Before I was diagnosed with MS, I was given many false diagnoses. My symptoms began in 2004 and slowly worsened, intensifying over the years. It wasn’t until January of 2010 that I was finally sent for an MRI for the first time. During this time, I struggled with a variety of symptoms that were never adequately explained. After a year and a half of active MS, I was finally led to the IMSMP and my life once again began to return to normal. My doctor was able to get my pain under control which I never thought possible. He gave me the right treatments and medications along with physical therapy and he was able to put me into a remission, after such a long drawn out relapse. When I returned to him after 6 months of the treatments he had me on, he asked me to walk down the hallway, I told him I’d run and I did. I went from having babysitters around the clock, because I could not take care of my three children under four years old, to having an additional baby and now running after my 4 beautiful children daily! The gratitude I have for the IMSMP and to Dr. Williams is beyond words. They are always there when you need them. The office staff is helpful, the doctors are amazing, and the research team is determined to find a cure, which I believe will come from Tisch MSRCNY. They were able to get me out of a 16 month relapse and they have kept me stable. A few months ago I was dancing at a wedding in high heels and I had the biggest smile on my face. I said to my husband, thanks to Dr. Williams I can do this. I know with the help of the IMSMP, I can maintain this wonderful quality of life that they have given back to me and my family." - Melinda Saffioti
