Reversing MS with Stem Cells, an Article Published in Lancet Neurology

Recently, Lancet Neurology published an article on the long-term follow up for a stem cell treatment on MS patients. This treatment involves high-dose chemotherapy to wipe out the immune system followed by stem cells to ‘reboot’ the immune system. The therapy has been studied for many years and is a very effective treatment for early, highly-aggressive, relapsing-remitting MS patients. However, safety issues persist and there are often other medications which can be used effectively in this population of patients. The therapy is not effective for progressive forms of MS and is NOT a repair therapy, which is the goal of Tisch MS Research Center of New York's FDA-approved phase I/II stem cell clinical trial.
