Dr. Gabriel Sara, consulting Hematologist/Oncologist at the IMSMP, spoke at Grand Rounds this morning. His talk entitled “Cancer 2013, Beyond Chemotherapy, Radiation and Surgery” focused on complementary strategies to traditional oncology treatment. These include music therapy, pet therapy, and massage therapy, among others. A variety of these modalities are being considered as we further develop plans for the expansion of our wellness center on the 3rd floor.

Dr. Jack Antel from the Montreal Neurologic Institute at McGill University spoke at Grand Rounds this morning. Dr. Antel’s talk was entitled "Basis of Tissue Injury and Repair in MS". The discussion focused on the pathophysiology of MS as well as theories as to the mechanisms of repair and remyelination.

A plant based diet is one of the best dietary strategies both for MS and for general health. While the benefits of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables outweigh risks from pesticide exposure, it is still best to reduce exposure when possible.  A simple tool to minimize pesticide exposure is to follow the guidelines from the Environmental Working Group and focus on buying the organic option for the foods on the “Dirty Dozen” list.  These foods are found to have the highest pesticide...

Earlier this morning, Dr. Saud Sadiq presented his stem cell research to the attendees of the Second International Adult Stem Cell Conference held at the Vatican.  Dr. Sadiq discussed the growing need for cellular therapy to be approved and used to repair the damage caused by multiple sclerosis.  IMSMP patient, Francesco Ferrari who resides in Italy, was in attendance and Dr. Sadiq was able to acknowledge Francesco's struggle with ms and illustrate the importance this treatment has for...
