Managing Through the Frozen Terrain from the Department of Rehabilitation

It is important now more than ever to keep yourself compliant and consistent with your home exercise program. At minimum, you should be performing 2-3 stretches of your leg muscles regardless of any ambulatory issues. For patients who usually go outdoors and cannot due to the weather, extra standing and walking exercises are recommended, IF standing and walking exercises have been prescribed. If they have not, you should contact your physical therapist about updating your exercise program while you are stuck indoors. For anyone with balance issues, it is recommended that extra assistance or assistive devices be used to safely navigate the street. Use of ice cane tips can be helpful. Good communication between you and the person helping you can prevent slips and falls.

The IMSMP urges all patients to remain safe during the winter months!
