Diet & Fatigue in MS

Low-Fat Plant Based Diet May Improve Fatigue for People with MS

People with MS commonly experience fatigue, which can decrease quality of life on a daily basis. A recent study presented at the American Academy of Neurology conference showed that a low-fat plant-based diet reduced fatigue in people with MS. Patients who followed the diet showed improvement on fatigue scores, as well as weight loss and reduction in cholesterol levels, along with improved scores for quality of life and overall mood. However, no difference was seen in brain lesions on MRI, relapse rate, or progression of disability.

This study is a great reminder that eating a healthy diet helps people feel better on a day-to-day basis. It is especially important to eat well and practice healthy lifestyle habits if you are living with a chronic medical issue like Multiple Sclerosis. Eating a colorful, plant-based diet is a great starting point for people with MS. Try to incorporate vegetables or fruits at every meal, and make a point to eat a variety of colors in order to include a range of vitamins and anti-oxidants. Nutritional needs vary from person to person, and best results will come from working with a knowledgeable practitioner on an individual evaluation and plan.
