Coronavirus Update 3/10/2020

To date, no patients of the IMSMP or Tisch MSRCNY have been diagnosed with the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Patients with multiple sclerosis are not necessarily at increased risk for the virus.

What are the symptoms of the Coronavirus?

The usual incubation period for COVID-19 is five days, although you may not experience any symptoms at this time. The initial symptoms of the virus include a fever (temperature over 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and a dry cough. After a few days, symptoms begin to include breathing difficulties and general malaise.

Patients with a fever will not be permitted at the Center. If you are experiencing a fever, please call the Front Desk at (212) 265 – 8070 to notify your neurologist and cancel your appointment.

How can I protect myself?

As a Center, we are taking all necessary precautions to provide a clean and safe environment for our patients and staff.

Prevention and Ways to Protect Yourself

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid crowded areas over 20 people (such as movie theaters, meetings, etc.) and unnecessary physical contact.
  • Avoid social activities and gatherings with close, intimate contact, examples include: playing cards, mahjong, etc. collecting and handling money, holding hands in religious settings, holding poles while riding the subway or other public transportation.
  • Avoid all international and domestic travel.
