Multiple Sclerosis patients can have
symptoms that are attributable to any part of the nervous system. These
symptoms are managed during an office visit by your primary neurologist. At
times, however, certain symptoms become particularly difficult to treat and
require additional management that cannot be addressed in a routine office
visit. Under these circumstances, patients are referred to a variety of
specialty clinics, which are conducted at the center by visiting subspecialty
physicians with experience treating MS patients.
Pain
and Spasticity Clinic
Effectively,
managing pain and spasticity are essential to proper rehabilitation and
optimizing a patient's level of disability. Our center is a pioneer in this
field, especially in the use of intrathecal mechanical devices to administer
medication directly around the spinal cord.
In fact, the IMSMP is one of only eight centers nationwide, who are
certified training sites for Medtronic, the leading manufacturer of intrathecal
pump. Patients experiencing severe pain or muscle spasms are selected by their
doctor to participate in our monthly Pain and Spasticity Clinic. The
multidisciplinary clinic is run by the patient's neurologist and includes
consultation with a pain management doctor and a neurosurgeon. Various pain
management issues are addressed including evaluation for intrathecal Baclofen
pumps.
Botox
Spasticity Clinic
Botulinum
Toxin Type A injections may be beneficial for certain MS patients with spasticity that is limited to (or significantly worse at) one region of the body. Dr.'s Sylvester, Williams and Stark evaluate and administer
Botox at the IMSMP on the second Tuesday of every month. The injections are tailored to each specific patient but
generally require several small injections at 3 month intervals.
Urology/Urogynecology
Clinic
Lisa Dabney, M.D. is a gynecologist with sub-specialty
training in urology and special experience in MS. She is on staff at the IMSMP
and sees patients weekly. Her work here
includes assessment and treatment of bladder, gynecological and sexual issues
in MS patients. Mantu Gupta, M.D. is
a urologist with specialty experience in multiple sclerosis. During this
monthly clinic, he treats patients with bladder and sexual issues at the center.
Orthopedic
Clinic
Orthopedic clinic is held once a month
with Allan E. Inglis, Jr., M.D., an orthopedist who assesses MS patients at the center
with joint or bone pain and manages their orthopedic treatment.
Tremor
Clinic
Tremor
clinic is held monthly with Robert R.
Goodman, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon affiliated with New York
Presbyterian/Columbia. Dr. Goodman
specializes in the use of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) to treat severe tremor.
Symptom
Management Clinic
Held
on a monthly basis by our nurse practitioner, symptom management clinic
focuses attention on patients' most troublesome and treatment-resistant
symptoms. This clinic offers expert input to determine optimal solutions to
symptoms such as fatigue, bladder and bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction and
other problems.

the infusion suite of the center. These classes are conducted by trained Yoga
instructors who specifically design the exercise to meet the unique needs of
